A SMS provides a systematic way to identify hazards and control risks while maintaining assurance that these risk controls are effective. SMS can be defined as:
A businesslike approach to safety. It is a systematic, explicit and comprehensive process for managing safety risks. As with all management systems, a safety management system provides for goal setting, planning, and measuring performance. A safety management system is woven into the fabric of an organisation. It becomes part of the culture, the way people do their jobs.
For the purposes of defining safety management, safety can be defined as:
The reduction of risk to a level that is as low as is reasonably practicable.
There are three imperatives for adopting a safety management system for a business – these are ethical, legal and financial.
A safety management system can be created to fit any business type and/or industry sector.
There is an implied moral obligation placed on an employer to ensure that work activities and the place of work to be safe, there are legislative requirements defined in just about every jurisdiction on how this is to be achieved and there is a substantial body of research which shows that effective safety management (which is the reduction of risk in the workplace) can reduce the financial exposure of an organisation by reducing direct and indirect costs associated with accident and incidents.
We advise in the design and implementation of Safety Management Systems, whether it be for accreditation in standards such as OHSAS 18001, in Australian Standards AS/NZ 4801 or for non-certified systems which simply enable your business to work safety and efficiently.
So whether you are looking for system development in just one area (such as Safety) or whether you are planning on a full integrated system bringing in various system components, we can assist you to bring it all together. We sit down with you, and go through your business processes to gain a full understanding of what you do and how you operate.
We then design and implement a system which will work with your current processes, utilising your existing forms and work procedures where possible. And best of all, we keep it simple. What we don’t do is provide you with reams of paper, and dump a convoluted, inappropriate and unmanageable system in your lap and walk away.
Your system needs to live and breathe, and be simple to use, easy to maintain, and tick all the compliance boxes.
To compliment your system, we can also supply and support Mango Compliance Software. Mango was created from the desire of industry qualified safety and quality consultants to see their systems maintained by their clients. Setting up a safety system is only a start towards reaping the benefits of a safety assurance program.
Keep as many risk or hazard registers as you like; even better, use your current register template as a guide to make your very own online version. Populating risks into Mango is a breeze, and once they’re in you can create hazard registers for vehicles, plant and machinery, laboratories and any other site you like.
Accidents and Incidents are recorded easily within Mango. You can link to company procedures and policies within the application allowing seamless audits and investigations by regulatory bodies. Run comprehensive reports showing accidents / incidents by department, branch, shift, mechanism or any system recorded variable - it’s completely up to you.

In addition to the above, we are also able to provide accredited training through our registered training organisation, Queensland Training Services Pty Ltd. Training available includes short courses such as asbestos removal, confined space entry, hazardous substances, working at heights, test and tag, White Card, HSR training, incident investigation, Functioning as a WHS Safety Advisor through to full qualifications such as Certificate IV and Diploma in Work Health and Safety, Management and Business, and Training and Assessment.
Your investment will depend on the size of your organisation, and what you already have in existence. It will also depend on how far you want us to go in the development and implementation, and how much you would like to do yourself. Therefore, you are in total control of what you spend. Either way, we will meet with you first, prior to quoting, discuss your requirements, and guide you through the process. A system from scratch will start at approximately $3,000 (plus GST). If you are seeking full third party accreditation, this will be a separate cost from our charges, however we can make you ‘certification ready’. For any additional consultancy or training services required, other than the development of your Safety Management System, a quote will be provided on request.
