Who Should Attend?

All persons who are required to wear breathing apparatus for part of their job, because they are working in a confined space with hazardous gases /vapours, on an oxygen deficient atmosphere or for other applications requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus.

What will they learn?

The aim of this course is to provide persons with the understanding and skills to use breathing apparatus. At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

• Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus
• Operate breathing apparatus
• Close down breathing apparatus operations

Recognition of Prior Learning

For those who hold an existing competency in this subject, or if you have prior experience in breathing apparatus, please speak to our staff regarding recognition of your prior skills and knowledge. You will be required to have a competency conversation with a trainer and have documented evidence of your skills and experience.

Please note your evidence must show your own personal involvement in checking, wearing and using breathing apparatus, there must be sufficient evidence of you utilising these skills over time, and your evidence must be reasonably current (i.e. within 2-3 years or so).

The evidence you supply must be able to cover the criteria found within the unit you are attempting to RPL. To drill down further into what is in the unit of competency, please go to www.training.gov.au and search the unit code.

Assessment and Outcome

Your competencies will be assessed through completion of theory and practical exercises. Upon successful completion of the course you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the unit MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus.

Reading, Writing and Digital Literacy

The course is delivered in English and requires the answering of questions and filling in forms. Reading and writing skills are required, however they do not need to be at a high level.

There is no requirement in this program of study to utilise technology such as computers or laptops, however breathing apparatus will be utilised within the training.

Equipment

Wherever possible we prefer to utilise the equipment that will be available to participants upon their return to work. Below is a list of equipment required for the conduct of the course. All equipment available for use must have received all appropriate checks, inspections and/or tests. In addition to the above equipment, an area will be required for practical application of the skills.

• Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
• Work bench or equivalent for equipment commissioning
• First aid kit
• Each participant will require safety helmets, work clothing, safety footwear, gloves and eye protection

Venue and Other Equipment

Where courses are conducted on-site then a suitable venue (which can accommodate up to 10 participants and 1 trainer) and a white board are to be provided by the client company. The venue shall have sufficient space for the participants to be seated comfortably for the duration of the theoretical training. Any catering costs shall be borne by the client company. Client to provide appropriate equipment for the practical training component. Additional Costs and Expenses

Where the training is conducted outside the immediate Cairns area then additional costs will be applicable. Any air fares, travel, accommodation, meals and materials freight incurred in the provision of this training will be on-charged. Mileage will be charged at 80¢ (plus GST) per kilometre and traveling time will be charged at our standard rates. Please contact us for a formal quotation for courses conducted outside of Cairns.
