Who Should Undertake This Study?
The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) Approved Managerial Course is a requirement for obtaining a QBCC Trade Contractors Licence.
You must complete an approved managerial qualification to be eligible for a:
- trade contractor
- nominee supervisor licence (trade classes)
Tradespeople wanting to sub-contract will need to complete this course.
Course Objectives
Course provides participants with skills and knowledge to:
- Identify legal and risk management requirements relating to business
- Implement procedures and processes to comply with legislative and regulatory requirements
- Negotiate and arrange contracts
- Mitigate business risks
Recognition of Prior Learning
For those who hold an existing competency in this subject, or if you have prior experience in setting up new businesses, please speak to our staff regarding recognition of your prior skills and knowledge. You will be required to have a competency conversation with a trainer and have documented evidence of your skills and experience.
Please note your evidence must show your own personal involvement in the criteria within this unit, there must be sufficient evidence of you utilising these skills over time, and your evidence must be reasonably current (i.e. within 2-3 years or so).

Assessment and Outcome
Upon successful completion of all assessment tasks you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for BSBESB402 Establish legal and risk management requirements of new business ventures. This may then be used to apply for a QBCC Trade Contractors Licence.
Reading, Writing and Digital Literacy
The course is delivered in English and requires the answering of questions, filling in tables, writing up business plans, and filling in registers and other templates. Reading and writing skills are required, and they do need to be at a satisfactory level, as there are a number of projects that require literacy skills.
There is also a requirement for students to use technology such as laptops or computers, as they need to type up documentation which looks business like and professional, just as they would if they were running their own business. The ability to access the Internet, research subjects such as business structures, legal requirements and taxation, and transfer this information into written advice and reports is also required.
