This qualification reflects the roles of individuals delivering training and assessment services in the vocational education and training (VET) sector. This qualification (or the skill sets derived from units of competency within it) is also suitable preparation for those engaged in the delivery of training and assessment of competence in a workplace context, as a component of a structured VET program.
The volume of learning of a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is typically six months to two years.
Achievement of this qualification by trainers is a requirement of the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015.
This qualification is offered in partnership with Fortress Learning (RTO # 31974).
On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Work in a vocational environment
- Design and develop learning programs
- Plan and organise training delivery
- Link learning to standards/benchmarks
- Facilitate learning to groups and individuals
- Evaluate the impacts of learning programs
- Develop plans and checklists for delivery and assessment
- Identify/use learning resources and equipment
- Understand language, literacy and numeracy concepts
- Practice and demonstrate delivery and assessment processes
- Design and develop assessment tools
- Plan and organise assessments
- Assess competence
- Participate in assessment validation
Those entering this program must be able to demonstrate vocational competency in their proposed teaching and assessing area.
Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification.
Already hold the TAE40110? Great stuff. You probably only need to study 1 or 2 units to upgrade to the new qualification. You will also need to show us currency in delivering and assessing accredited courses.
The above process utilises Recognition of Prior Learning. Upon enrolment, you will be asked a series of questions, and participate in a “competency conversation” with a trainer. Your history of study, skills and experience will be taken into account, and where your experience supports the criteria included in the units of competency, this will be used to reduce the amount of study you need to do for this qualification.
Documentary or other evidence will be required for any statements relating to previous experience or credit transfer.
Please note we no longer accept the BSZ40198 qualification for RPL, as the qualification has been superseded for too long, and currency of training and assessing accredited criteria will not be evident. Those holding a BSZ should undertake the full program.
Those who still hold the TAA40104 qualification will need to show they have been actively training accredited curriculum within the last few years to use this qualification for RPL purposes.
It is important to understand for RPL to be issued, knowledge combined with recent experience in the VET industry needs to be established.

The online only base price to study the TAE is $1900 for a 6 month enrolment, or $2300 for a 12 month enrolment.
But do you want more? Do you want to attend a classroom session and experience the dynamic environnment of group interaction? This is perfect for those who have FIFO rosters, or who prefer to break their studies down into more manageable chunks.
And if you enrol and pay to attend all the clusters, you save a chunk of money, as you’ll only pay $2,800 !

Deliver to Groups and Individuals
This qualification requires you to deliver multiple training sessions as part of your assessment tasks. You will need to have acess to two individuals to practice your delivery, and receive feedback from them. You will also need to have access to two more groups of people. One group must have a minimum of 8 learners in it, whilst the other group must have a minimum of three learners in it. Undertaking this qualification does assume you are in a workplace and have access to these numbers of learners.
You will also need to have suitably qualified observers who ideally hold a TAE40110 Certificate IV TAE or similar such qualification or experience, to observe you delivering your sessions. If you don't have a qualified observer to watch you and fill in the observation check list, then you will need video recording facilities to record your training delivery for each session.
For those who may not have access to these groups of people, Total Management and Training will be coordinating a 'TAE Presentation Day' in the various regions. You are welcome to attend these sessions, however please note the following:
- they will only go ahead if minimum numbers are met (i.e. enough students who wish to do their presentations)
- there is a cost to attend these sessions and present your topic - cost is $500 for those who are undertaking study via Total Management and Training, or $750 for those enrolled at other RTO's.
You will need access to not less than five separate individuals on which to practice and conduct assessment. The assessments must be undertaken under the supervision of a qualified assessor and cover an entire unit of competency for each candidate, including:
- the application of different assessment methods and instruments involving a range of activities and events
- using two-way communication and feedback with the candidate
- exercising judgement in making the assessment decision
- recording and reporting assessment outcomes in accordance with the assessment system and organisational, legal and ethical requirements
- reviewing the assessment process
You must utilise a recognition of prior learning (RPL) process in the assessment of at least one candidate (which may be one of the five candidates above) and you must make reasonable adjustments in the assessment of at least one candidate (which may be one of the five candidates above).
Please note Total Management and Training will provide you with access to these five individuals as part of your study with our organisation at no charge, if you have enrolled in our full qualification or clusters.
If you are not enrolled with TMT and require this service, you will need to enrol in our Assess Cluster - Part 2 and have the choice of:
- attendance at our classroom facilitation to participate in the assessing of individuals - cost is $600, or
- arrange for one-on-one tuition with our TAE trainer/assessor to access these students and conduct assessment - cost is $750
- A training and assessment plan customised to your circumstances
- Comprehensive learning resources, plus useful templates
- Pre-recorded topic presentations
- Industry sourced webinars and video content
- One hour of one-on-one trainer tuition time - can be used in minimum 15 minute blocks

What to Bring to Class
We have student laptops available for use in the classroom, as your studies will require the use of this technology both online and offline.
If you wish to bring your own laptop computer (or decent tablet or notebook) please ensure you are familiar with using it and researching online, as we cannot provide IT assistance during the classroom facilitation.
Please note iPads generally cannot do the tasks we require, so they are not recommended.
Government or corporate laptops are also not recommended due to the security restrictions they have with regards to accessing the Internet.
Time Required to Complete
How long will this take me to complete? This is a common question, and difficult to answer, as everyone is different. Some work faster than others, have existing experience, and prior knowledge. They will probably complete faster. If you have a good study ethic, available time, and chip away at the assessments on a regular basis, you can most likely get this done in the 6 month timeframe or even sooner. If you have limited time, and/or study is challenging for you, give yourself the 12 month timeframe.
Get It Done Sessions
Life gets in the way of study sometimes, and we can easily fall behind on our study routine. Never fear, we have scheduled Get It Done sessions on weekdays, after hours and on weekends, so you can come to TMT and work on your assessments knowing a trainer will be available to assist you if you are stuck on any of your assessment tasks. To book, click on this link.
The course is conducted in our training rooms in Cairns. Where dedicated courses are conducted on-site at a client's premises, a suitable venue and white board are to be provided by the client company. The venue shall have sufficient space for the participants to be seated comfortably for the duration of training, use laptop computers, and enable presentation equipment such as data projectors to be used. Any catering costs shall be borne by the client company. Please contact us to discuss alternate arrangements if there is any difficulty in providing these facilities and equipment.
Upon successful completion of assessment tasks (or the RPL process if you have taken that pathway) you will receive the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification issued by Fortress Learning (RTO # 31974).
How to Enrol
If you wish to enrol in the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, please click on this link, and complete the enrolment form. Course dates are set out on our training calendars. We are delivering in Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane.
To assist with affordability, any individuals enrolling in this qualification may enter into a payment plan where an initial small payment is taken up front, and further instalments are deducted via direct debit over a period of time.
For further information, please read the Student Handbook, which may be found at the bottom of our website.
Many people choose training providers purely on price, without understanding what they will get for their money. Extremely cheap courses of study generally provide no trainer support, and many students never finish their studies, because it all becomes too hard.
Therefore take care when choosing providers based purely on price.
For organisations who would like to book a dedicated course for their team, please contact our office and ask for a quote. Dates will be scheduled on acceptance of the quote.
