Anyone involved in tree felling in a variety of work settings, which may include a forest, agricultural, domestic, local council, and emergency services and other government agency environment. With the exception of minor forest produce, it is not considered a suitable level for commercial harvesting operations.
Why Should They Enrol?
There are no current mandatory training requirements for the operation of chainsaws. However, chainsaws are one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment used in the workplace. The operators should have a minimum level of competency to minimise the risk of injury to themselves and others. It is strongly recommended that workers be provided with chainsaw training by their organisation if they are expected to use chainsaws to perform their tasks.
This unit describes the outcomes required to assess, plan and safely carry out manual tree-felling operations using a chainsaw. It is an introductory or base-level unit that covers the felling procedures for relatively small trees (max. 50cm diameter) with a low level of complexity.
What Will They Learn?
The following topics are covered in this training:
- Prepare for felling
- Establish general falling direction
- Visually assess site conditions and surroundings
- Assess tree and plan felling
- Clear work site and escape route of debris and growth
- Apply tree felling techniques
- Maintain equipment
How Will They Be Assessed?
Participant’s competencies will be assessed through completion of theory and practical activities. Upon successful completion of the study participants will be issued with a statement of attainment for the unit of competency FWPCOT2236 Fall trees manually (basic).
What if help is required with reading, writing and maths?
We can provide support in some areas. Where we cannot we will provide direction to other agencies who may be able to assist.
This course may be conducted in our training rooms in Atherton, or on-site at client premises. Where courses are conducted on-site then a suitable venue and white board are to be provided by the client company.
Due to the nature of the course access to trees suitable for basic felling must be provided. Ideally we prefer access to 6 trees per person (24 trees) for a full course. The trees must be a maximum of 50cm across and be free from defects or complex situations. The trainer must see these trees (site visit or photo) prior to the course.
The venue shall have sufficient tables and chairs for participants to be seated comfortably for the duration of training. Any catering costs shall be borne by the client company. Please contact us to discuss alternate arrangements if there is any difficulty in providing these facilities and equipment.
Travelling Costs and Expenses
Where the training is conducted outside the immediate Atherton area then additional costs will be applicable. Any airfares, travel, accommodation, meals and materials freight incurred in the provision of this training will be on-charged. Mileage will be charged at 80¢ (plus GST) per kilometre and traveling time will be charged at our standard rates. Please contact us for a formal quotation for courses conducted outside of Atherton.
What to Bring to Training
Participants will be required to wear safety boots, work gloves, long sleeved shirt and pants when undertaking practical training and assessment. It is recommended participants also wear a hat and suitable garments which provide them with sun protection. If you own or have access to a chainsaw bring this with you, however chainsaws will be available.
Other personal protective equipment such as visors, ear muffs, chaps, etc will be provided as part of the course.
To get the most out of this course it is highly recommend that you bring along your own chainsaw, associated equipment and manufacturer’s manual. This allows you to gain confidence using your own chainsaw which benefits use after the course.
