Is this course known by other names?

Yes, lots in fact. This course has previously been referred to as G189, S123, or QMS1 QMS2 QMS3. For those who have been around the sun a few times, even further back units had prefixes of MNMG, MNQGEN and MNCG. However, whatever name you want to give this training, it all has the same outcome. You will learn communication, risk management and investigation skills.

Who should attend?

A supervisor at a mine is a worker who is authorised by the site senior executive to give directions to other workers. Under the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999, supervisors must receive the following training (as set out by the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee).

  • RIIRIS301E Apply risk management processes
  • RIIWHS301E Conduct safety and health investigations
  • RIICOM301E Communicate information

Those appointed Site Safety and Health Representatives also require these competencies, which must be obtained within three months of appointment.

What will they learn?

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to communicate information to complete work activities within the mining, drilling and civil infrastructure industry. It includes planning and preparing for and conducting communication via a number of different methods to ensure work activities are understood. This applies to individuals who are working in an operational, supervisory or team leader capacity.

The course also applies to those who carry out or assist in carrying out risk assessment in the workplace. This could be an employer, line manager, supervisor, safety representative or employee. Skills and knowledge will also be gained for those required to conduct work related health and safety investigations as a result of an incident and to contribute to a safe workplace.

Objectives

The course will enable participants to:

  • Communicate information to achieve work outcomes
  • Develop and perform work activity presentation
  • Participate in resolving conflicts
  • Plan and prepare for risk management
  • Identify and assess unacceptable risk
  • Identify and recommend risk controls
  • Contribute to the implementation of risk controls
  • Review risk management documentation
  • Determine objectives and develop investigation plans
  • Gather and evaluate information
  • Identify courses of action and prepare and present investigation reports

 

Course Outcome

Participants will be assessed via theory assessment and practical activities. At successful completion of the course participants will receive a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment for:

  • RIIRIS301E Apply risk management processes
  • RIIWHS301E Conduct safety and health investigations
  • RIICOM301E Communicate information

Recognition of Prior Learning

A learner’s history of study, skills and experience can be taken into account but it must support the criteria included in the units of competency. Documentary evidence will be required.

 

Course Venue & Equipment

This course may be conducted in our training rooms in Cairns, or on-site at client premises. Where courses are conducted on-site then a suitable venue is to be provided by the client company which includes data projection and a white board. The venue shall have sufficient tables and chairs for participants to be seated comfortably for the duration of training. Any catering costs shall be borne by the client company. Please contact us to discuss alternate arrangements if there is any difficulty in providing these facilities and equipment.

Additonal Costs & Expenses

Where the training is conducted outside the immediate Cairns area then additional costs will be applicable. Any airfares, travel, accommodation, meals and materials freight incurred in the provision of this training will be on-charged. Mileage will be charged at 80¢ (plus GST) per kilometre and traveling time will be charged at our standard rates. Please contact us for a formal quotation for courses conducted outside of Cairns.

Where consideration needs to be applied due to cultural, language, literacy, numeracy or other special needs, extra time will be allowed to ensure participants receive sufficient supported training. This time will be charged at our standard rates.
