What is meant by de-esclating conflict?
We’ve all experienced minor incidents which turn into a bigger situation, potentially even a crisis. These situations can escalate quickly, especially if emotions are running high. During these tense situations it’s essential to know how to support people in being able to adjust their behaviour. De-escalation training teaches practical techniques and concepts to prevent further escalation, all while maintaining the dignity and respect of the person involved.
De-escalation is a human behavior that is intended to prevent the escalation of conflicts. People may become committed to behaviours which tend to escalate conflict, so specific measures must be taken to avoid such escalation. De-escalation is aimed at calmly communicating with an agitated person in order to understand, manage and resolve their concerns. Ultimately, these actions should help reduce the person's agitation and potential for future aggression or violence.
Noone needs a degree in counseling to sense uncomfortable situations. Most of us have more than adequate danger detectors designed to alert us when someone is having a troubling emotional episode. Learning to de-escalate is a bit of a mixture of art, science, and social diplomacy. Because we cannot assume what the other person will seek to do; we must rely on our own abilities to manage the situation, and try to de-escalate and defuse emtional situations. This training will help you to do that.
