Who Should Attend?
All persons involved in electrical work who are required to maintain skill levels in low voltage rescue procedures (including switchboard rescue) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as part of their duties.
Students completing Low Voltage Rescue and CPR will be meeting the requirements under the Queensland Work Health and Safety Act for a person “competent in rescue and resuscitation”.
Training Frequency
The Queensland electrical licensing requirements read "Rescue and resuscitation training must have been completed in the last 12 months".
The Electrical Safety Regulations states the following:
Safety Observer
(a) generally, for electrical work, means a person who -
(i) is competent -
(A) to implement control measures in an emergency; and
(B) to rescue and resuscitate a worker who is carrying out the work, if necessary; and
(ii) has been assessed in the previous 1 year as competent to rescue and resuscitate a person
What Will They Learn?
This course covers the performance of rescue procedures from live low voltage (LV) apparatus, not including overhead lines and underground cables in the workplace. It specifies the mandatory requirements of rescue from a live LV panel and how they apply in the context of transmission, distribution or rail work functions. It encompasses responsibilities for health, safety and risk management processes at all operative levels and adherence to safety practices as part of the normal way of doing work.
The CPR component covers the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. This training applies to all persons who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
Upon completion of this course, the participant will understand the issues relating to rescuing a person from low voltage apparatus, including practical use of rescue apparatus; as well as being able to perform CPR on a casualty.
Objectives
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:
- respond to an emergency situation
- perform CPR procedures
- communicate and review details of the incident
- prepare to perform rescue procedures from a live low voltage panel
- carry out rescue from live low voltage panel
- complete the low voltage panel rescue procedure
Assessment and Outcome
Participants will be assessed through completion of theory and practical exercises. For the CPR component, there is a requirement for participants to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, so participants must have the physical ability to kneel on the floor to do this. There is also a requirement for participants to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface. Please note CPR will include both compressions and ventilations.
With regards to the low voltage rescue component, participants will be required to pull an LVR manikin from a simulated switchboard, using rescue crooks and other equipment.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for UETDRRF004 Perform rescue from a live LV panel and HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Recognition of Prior Learning
For those who hold an existing competency in this subject, or if you have prior experience in CPR and/or low voltage rescue, please speak to our staff regarding recognition of your prior skills and knowledge. You will be required to have a competency conversation with a trainer and have documented evidence of your skills and experience.
Please note your evidence must show your own personal involvement in either CPR, low voltage rescue or both, there must be sufficient evidence of you utilising these skills over time, and your evidence must be reasonably current (i.e. within 2-3 years or so).
The evidence you supply must be able to cover the criteria found within the units you are attempting to RPL. To drill down further into what is in each unit of competency, please go to www.training.gov.au and search the unit code.
Reading, Writing and Digital Literacy
The course is delivered in English and requires the answering of questions and filling in forms. Reading and writing skills are required, however they do not need to be at a high level. There is no digital literacy requirement in this training.
Student Support
For those who have concerns regarding their ability to undertake this study program, please refer to our Student Information and Support page under the Training menu for further information on what services are offered to those requiring extra assistance.
Course Venue and Equipment
The course is conducted in our training rooms in Stratford.
Where courses are conducted on-site then a suitable venue, data projector (or TV monitor with HDMI jack) and white board are to be provided by the client company. The venue shall have sufficient space for the participants to be seated comfortably for the duration of training. A clear area also needs to be made available to enable the simulation of removing someone from a low voltage device. Any catering costs shall be borne by the client company. TMT will provide all equipment required to deliver the training. Please contact us to discuss alternate arrangements if there is any difficulty in providing these facilities and equipment.
Additional Costs and Expenses
Where the training is conducted outside the immediate Cairns area then additional costs will be applicable. Any airfares, travel, accommodation, meals and materials freight incurred in the provision of this training will be on-charged. Mileage and traveling time will be charged at our standard rates. Please contact us for a formal quotation for courses conducted outside of Cairns.
